My philosophy about our belongings is rooted in the way I was raised. My father's habits and behaviors landed somewhere on the spectrum of hoarding, were almost entirely sentimental in their nature, and resulted in the current six storage he had until the day he died. My mother was easily distracted and chronically disorganized. I would consider both of my parents perfectionists--they start tons of projects, but they have such a high standard that they struggle to complete them. I ended up manifesting these same qualities as a young adult: undiagnosed ADHD was running rampant and I accrued debt as shopping became a coping mechanism. It took the realization that I was: spending most of my money on things and most of my life moving those things around... before I could change the way I related to my stuff. For me, it took many tries before I really got the hang of letting things go. It's a trust fall kind of feeling, but has huge rewards on the other side. The same way a roller coaster is scary at first, and exhilarating by the time it's over. I love helping people take that ride.
